Day 159 - June 8th

Today, with our monthly walking group we visited the new Clophill Lakes Nature Reserve.

We started our walk at Meppershall and walked across fields to Gravenhurst.

We walked through the field of rare Red Pole Cattle which we have crossed before. Today there were several young calves amongst the adults.

Emerging near the A507 we crossed the road into the site of Cainhoe Castle Scheduled Monument.

As a former Fuller’s Earth quarry, the site of the Nature Reserve has been shaped by its industrial heritage. The lakes lie where the quarry extraction took place, and the whole site has become a haven for wildlife.

Having walked round the edge of the lakes, we then headed back towards Meppershall via Campton.

The final climb back to Meppershall was up Crackle Hill, which is always a challenge.
