Day 96 - April 6th

Today was a lovely sunny day and we decided to try a new walk. We drove to Waterford Heath near Hertford and walked round the heath and also the nearby Golding Estate.

Waterford Heath is a nature reserve created on former sand and gravel quarry with a very varied landscape and is managed by the Herts and Middlesex Wildlife Trust.

The area is mainly grassland with areas of scrub and woodland.

We walked alongside the River Beane and spotted some Marsh Marigolds on the waters edge.

After a short stretch of walking alongside the road, we entered the Golding Estate. The Goldings Estate is a large Elizabethan style country house surrounded by beautiful landscaped grounds. In the 1930s the house was used as a Dr Barnado's ophanage but in the 1990s was converted into apartments. What an amazing place to live.

After walking round the estate we headed back along the road and headed back towards the car. We retraced our steps to the River Beane and headed in the opposite direction to where we had originally walked.

Back at Waterford Heath we stumbled across this sculpture. It is one of 21 identical pieces located throughout England and Wales. Entitled 'Breaking the Mould', the sculpture is shaped like an enormous seed that has broken free from a mould. It symbolises new life and growth arising from areas of former industrial decline. Each of the six-part cast stone and iron sculptures was installed as a 'Marker' at 21 Changing Places regeneration sites across England and Wales, signifying the transformation of 1,000 hectares of post-industrial wasteland into parks and open spaces.
