Day 141 - May 21st

Warning: Very heavy photo post!!!

Today we headed to Bressingham Steam Museum and Gardens

Bressingham Steam & Gardens is a steam museum and gardens located at Bressingham in neighbouring Norfolk, The site has several narrow gauge rail lines and a number of types of steam engines and vehicles in its collection and is also the home of a Dad's Army exhibition and has a vintage carousel.

On the day of our visit four steam trains were operating and we rode two of them round the site and into the countryside beyond.

One of the trains travels round the gardens so having had a preview of what to expect we then explored them on foot.

Even though it was early in the flowering season, the gardens were still spectacular and full of colour.

The Bressingham museum is housed in several sheds and includes lots of different steam engines, trains, etc.

The museum is also the home of the national Dad's Army (Television sitcom) collection of vintage vehicles. These are located on a reconstruction of the High Street in the fictional Walmington-on-Sea beside the Jones' butcher's shop, Frazer's undertaker's shop and Captain Mainwaring's bank office. The vehicles include Jones' van and the dust cart from the 1971 film, Mainwaring's Austin 8 staff car, a vintage fire engine, steamroller and traction engine.

We ended our visit with a ride on 'The Gallopers' - a carousel built in 1897.

On our way home we decided to stop at a local artisan bakery near our holiday home and picked up the most scrummy cakes.

I once read an instruction about travelling - "See all the Sights. Eat all the Food.". We certainly did that and to be doubly sure we ended the day with a meal at a local pub 😉.

I like that motto of see all the sights, eat all the food!

What a beautiful spot to visit. Mr Man would spend hours in with the trains & I'd happily wander the gardens & ride the carousel.
