Day 334 - November 30th

This weekend the Congregational Church are holding their annual Christmas Tree Festival. My Book Club was invited to display a tree. This evening we gathered at the church to try and build a tree out of the books we have read. It was harder than expected, but after an hour or so we created something which resembled a tree, albeit a little short.

Day 333 - November 29th

Today we visited Peterborough for a Christmas shopping trip. It must be 20+ years since I last went Christmas shopping at Peterborough. It hadn't really changed. The Queensgate Shopping Centre was already decorated and looked good.

Day 330 - November 26th

Today we went for a very chilly 4.5 mile circular walk around the grounds of the beautiful Brocket Hall, starting and ending at the Waggoners pub in Ayot Green.

Brocket Hall hit the headlines a decade or so ago when Lord Brocket was sent to prison after being found guilty of a £4.5 million insurance fraud. Wild rumours abounded that he'd buried his classic Ferraris beneath the undulating greens of his golf course, or perhaps even ditched them in the river. The reality was that he'd dismantled them and shipped them into a North London lock-up!

We started by walking through the village of Ayot Green and then headed onto the Ayot Greenway disused railway path.

It was so pretty.

We followed the path for quite a way through woodland before we circled back into the Brocket Hall Park.

We visited the photogenic Paine Bridge built in 1772 by James Paine.

Part of the walk took us through the Brocket Hall golf course which sits in the beautiful parkland. One of the holes is even played directly across the river requiring a 170-yard shot.

We then headed out of the park and back to our starting point by the pub.

Day 328 - November 24th

I've seen this game in several shops. I'm intrigued by it but not enough to want to buy it.

Day 325 - November 21st

Today a friend and I travelled to London to see Moulin Rouge the Musical at The Piccadilly.

The show was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

The Christmas lights in and around Piccadilly Circle were lovely.

To celebrate their Platform 9¾, the Christmas tree at Kings Cross Station was Harry Potter themed, decorated with baubles, envelopes and other Harry Potter themed ornaments.

At St Pancras Station a huge 12 metre tall tree is made of books. In partnership with Hatchards, the UKs oldest bookshop, the tree features a winding staircase, wrapping around book shelves holding almost 4,000 books which have all been hand painted and inscribed with Christmassy titles. At the base of the tree are eight cosy cubby holes where you can sit and have a rest whilst listening to 5-minute excerpts of an audiobook. Sadly we were in a hurry to catch our train home so didn't have time to stop and look at it in detail but I managed to snap a quick photo as we passed by.

Day 324 - November 20th

A nearby house recently had the hedge at the front of their garden removed and it has been fascinating over the past week to see a new handwoven fence being created.

We had a family meal at the local pub tonight. I can recommend the Slow Roasted Pork Belly with mash potato, braised red cabbage, apple puree & cider gravy.

Day 317 - November 13th

Yesterday when I attended the Act of Remembrance in the village it was raining, so I didn't hang around afterwards to look at the wreaths which had been laid or take any photos. Today I popped back to have a look.

Day 316 - November 12th

This morning I attended the village Remembrance Day service and Act of Remembrance and then this afternoon joined our walking group for a 4.5 mile walk from Silsoe War Memorial to Meppershall War Memorial.

The war memorial at Silsoe had been decorated for Remembrance Day with hundreds of knitted poppies which cascaded from the top of the memorial onto the grass.

Our walk took us through Wrest Park, past the manor house and through Whitehall Plantation.

At Lower Gravenhurst we stopped briefly at St Marys Church which we also visited during the Bike n Hike in September.

The 14th century Church has been unaltered for over 600 years.

We followed the River Hit to the Cow Bridge before climbing back up into Meppershall. Cow Bridge is thought to date from the Victorian era and was used to allow livestock to access the meadows.

The bridge was repaired in 2003 and a plaque next to it commemorates this, but unfortunately due to the fragility of the bridge it is no longer possible to walk on the bridge.

Today when we walked past the bridge there were actually cows grazing nearby - Red Poll cattle, a native East Anglian breed.

Day 311 - November 7th

So many plants in the garden seem to be flowering later than they usually do. These Salvias are still going strong.
