Day 259 - September 16th

Today we woke to a dry, sunny day so we decided to explore Aldeburgh a little.

Aldeburgh is  a pretty seaside town which grew from an old fishing and ship building centre.

Fishermen still land their catch on the shingle beach and there were a few boats on the beach waiting for the next high tide.

On the seafront there are several 'shacks' smoking and selling fish.

Opposite the lifeboat station we spotted a wall which had been decorated with painted pebbles. The pebbles had been placed inside gaps in the wall and made quite a display.

By the Model Boat Pond, we said hello to Snooks.

Snooks was a dog owned by Nora and Robin Acheson who were both doctors in Aldeburgh. Snooks the dog would often attend house visits around Aldeburgh and was a common site trotting down Aldeburgh High Street.  The Snooks statue was unveiled in 1961 to commemorate Dr Robin Acheson’s life and work in Aldeburgh and his wife's name, was added to the plinth in 1981.

Also near the Model Boast Pond is the Moot Hall. Built in 1520, the timber framed Moot Hall is a municipal building and as well as housing the Aldeburgh Museum is also the meeting place of the Aldeburgh Town Council.

After a lunch of Lobster Rolls, we decided to walk part of the Suffolk Coast path to the village of Thorpeness.

Before leaving Aldeburgh, we passed Maggie Hambling’s Scallop sculpture.

The huge steel sculpture is a tribute to composer Benjamin Britten who lived in Aldeburgh and walked almost daily along the stretch of coastline between there and Thorpeness.

Arriving in Thorpeness, we headed for the boating lake and an ice-cream, before retracing our steps back to Aldeburgh.

In the evening we had a very nice meal in a local pub.
