Day 63 - March 3rd

This morning we went for a walk on the Cole Green Way

The Cole Green Way runs from Hertford to Welwyn Garden City and follows the former route of the Hertford to Welwyn Garden City line of the Great Northern Railway. The line was used for passenger services until it's closure in the 196os and the smooth surface is now used by walkers, runners, cyclists and horse riders.

At the start of our walk we passed underneath the Hertford Viaduct. Overhead the track carries trains into Hertford North Station whilst we walked along the route of the old branch line.

Here and there in the wooded areas we saw fungi amongst the moss and on logs, and lots of lichen too.

In the underpass beneath the A414 we stopped to look at the amazing murals created by a graffiti artist. They were amazing.

Continuing along the Cole Green Way we reached the site of the former Cole Green Station. The platform is still in place and benches have been provided in a style similar to those which would have originally been here. The sign is also in the colours of the Great Northern Railway and information boards tell the history of the station.

All along the route there were signs of spring daffodils, blossom and celandines.

Most of our walks are circular routes but this one was a 'there and back' walk so when we reached Welwyn Garden City ... we turned round and walked back, the way we had come, to Hertford.

I am so envious of the beautiful places you have for rambling or walking about in. They all look quite safe with well kept walkways. Yes spring green with envy :)
