Day 145 - May 25th

This morning we went in search of the Burnt Tip Orchids at Knocking Hoe. We had heard that they were in flower, despite being a week or so earlier than we have previously seen them.

As usual we parked at Pirton and walked up Wood Lane.

There were lots of dog roses in the hedgerow.

Soon we reached the Knocking Hoe Nature Reserve and set out in search of the orchids.

We were watched by the curious Herdwick Sheep that graze the reserve.

We found the rare Burnt Tip Orchids but they were smaller and there were fewer than we have seen in previous years. I assume the dry weather hasn't helped.

We also found some more common orchids. They weren't fully open yet.

I had also hoped to find the Pasque flowers but our timing wasn't great. They had already gone to seed. We were told by another walk that this year they had flowered early - In April!
