Day 112 - April 22nd

This morning we went for a circular walk from/to Baulk Wood Henlow via Henlow Common & Langford Meadows and Langford Mill.

Previously a landfill site, Baulk wood was fully restored and is now a lovely place to visit with woodland and meadows.

Like Campton Plantation which we visited recently, there are quite a few wooden sculptures throughout the wood.

In the wood we found what at first we thought was wild garlic but on googling we found to be Allium Paradoxum an Asian species of wild onion.

We also found forget-me-nots .....

.... and Cowslips.

We then left the wood and leaded towards Langford through Henlow Common & Langford Meadows. This is a nature reserve beside the River Ivel. The site is prone to flooding and when we crossed it was very wet and boggy.

In the middle of the meadow we found a clump of Cuckoo Flowers also known as "Lady's Smock" and the time they bloom is thought to coincide with the arrival of the first Cuckoo - a sure sign that spring has arrived at last.

After walking across the meadow we emerge in Langford next to Langford Mill which at one time was a working paper mill but is now apartments.

We then walked back along the road towards Henlow passing the Langford War Memorial.

Finally we turned of the road and walked back along the river to Baulk Wood.

What a beautiful place to walk & celebrate Earth Day. I think I'll suggest at our upcoming Parks & Recreations town meeting, that maybe we could host a contest for wood carvers to use several of the stumps in the local conservation park. I liked the Langford Mill area. Years ago when I was in England, I visited a saddlery near Blenheim Palace, called Langford's, I bought a Beswick horse there which I named Langford. He still sits in pride of place. :)
