52 Walks in 2010 - Walk 22 - Portland Bill (12th August 2010)

After our walk around the castle and marina we headed to the other end of Portland to Portland Bill.

Portland Bill Lighthouse guides vessels heading for Portland and Weymouth through hazardous waters as well as acting as a waymark for ships navigating the English Channel. There are actually three lighthouses at Portland Bill, but it is the taller red and white one that is in service today, albeit automatically controlled.

During the summer months, and subject to opening times, you can go inside the lighthouse to the top. Wayne and Lara climbed to the top whilst the boys and I stayed at the bottom.

Near the lighthouse is the Trinity House Obelisk and this stands at the tip of the rocky area just past the lighthouse. A few years ago Trinity House wanted to pull the 150+ year old grade II listed monument down because there were fears it would fall into the sea but in the light of local opinion the Obelisk was saved

Also near the lighthouse is Pulpit Rock. The artificial stack of rock is a popular photo point and was left in the 1870s after a natural arch was cut away by quarrymen
