52 Walks in 2010 - Walk 23 - Tout Quarry and Sculpture Park, Portland (12th August 2010)

Our last walk on Portland was around Tout Quarry and Sculpture Park. I had read about the place on the Internet and was keen to visit.

The abandoned Tout Quarry, where previously Portland stone was quarried, is now a sculpture park and is used to display an amazing collection of carvings and artefacts. The sculptures found within the quarry landscape have been carved into the rock face and quarry boulders .

We wandered through the quarry for a couple of hours and every now and then came across a sculpture.

It was obvious what some sculptures were .......

.......... whilst others were a little more abstract.

Not sure what this next sculpture is of ..... but I like it.

Lano's Bridge was built in the mid-1800s to carry a high level tramway taking spoil to the cliff edge with a low level tramway going through the arch taking stone to the Merchants' Railway. In the late 1980s well equipped and determined vandals attempted to demolish this old bridge and almost reached the keystone. Following an appeal for old photographs of the bridge, it was carefully reconstructed with each stone put back in its original place. (information from Chris Kirby)

Tout Quarry was last worked nearly a century ago by hand and is a network of pathways, labyrinths and gullies.

There were spectacular views from parts of the Quarry. This next photo shows Weymouth in the distance and Chesil Beach, and in the centre of the photo is the Marina which we had visited earlier in the day.

I think this face was one of my favourite sculptures.

This one of a falling man was on the side of a cliff.

Most of the sculptures were life size and bigger like this elephant.
