Day 223 - August 11th

This morning we walked to Nothe Fort. The fort was built between 1860 and 1872 by 26 Company of the Royal Engineers to protect Portland and Weymouth Harbours. The fort was abandoned in 1956 and purchased by the local council in 1961. It is now a museum and remains one of the best-preserved forts of its kind in the country

It was a dry, bright day when we visited and there were excellent views from the ramparts.

On the terrace there were displays and underground there were many tunnels and secret passageways beneath the fort, including a spooky ghost tunnel and lots more displays about the history of the fort and the military.

The fort is also well known for it's Mouse Hunt, with children encouraged to find the mice hidden in the fort.

After lunch, we paid a visit to SandWorldSand sculpting has been synonymous with Weymouth for many years and SandWorld showcases the amazing work of some of the world’s leading sand sculptors. We have visited SandWorld before but as the sculptures on display change each year, there's always something new to see. This year, many of the sculpture were inspired by science fiction films and tv shows.
