Day 231 - August 19th

Today was our last full day in Wales and we visited Plas Newydd House and Gardens, a National Trust property on Anglesey.

We were warned by the volunteers that the house wasn't looking it's best. Over the next 2 years, the National Trust are undertaking a large scale project at Plas Newydd to upgrade the heating and electrical systems, the majority of which were first installed in the 1930s. Work to prepare the property for this began prior to the pandemic but when lockdown was announced work had to stop. Therefore much of the furniture is now covered or missing and artifacts not on display.

An impressive display of military uniforms were however still on display.

Plas Newydd is home to one of the largest murals in the United Kingdom, painted by artist Rex Whistler. The fantastical mural is over 17.5 metres long and was designed as an imaginary view from the windows of Plas Newydd.

The rooms in the house which are still furnished and accessible were beautiful.....

... although Lord Anglesey’s study was very chaotic!

Outside, the grounds and gardens were lovely - especially the Italianate terrace

On leaving Plas Newydd, we decided to drive to Pwllheli , We stayed near Pwllheli last year and knew Pwllheli beach was a good place for a walk.

Pwllheli, like many other town and villages during lookdown, encouraged children to paint pebbles. The pebbles which were painted during lockdown (and some since) have been permanently cemented onto the top of the walls on the promenade.

In the evening we made a last visit to Dinas Dinlle and climbed once again to the hillfort to watch one last welsh sunset.
