After a long day in the car yesterday, we chose not to venture to far today and so we drove the short 15 minutes or so to Caernarfon. Caernarfon sits on the eastern shore of the Menai Strait and is the home of Caernarfon Castle where the current king was invested as the Prince of Wales in 1969.
We started our day with a walk through the town. There are one or two tourist streets with coffee shops and small independent shops.
We or course, stopped for drinks and cakes!
This year, a huge Ferris Wheel has been installed on the docks beside the castle. We took a ride and had great views of the area.
Although we have visited the castle several times before, we decided to visit it again. When we visited two years ago much of it was covered with scaffolding whilst conservation work and improvements to the visitor experience with access being created to areas which were not previously accessible, was being carried out. Now the scaffolding has gone and the work had been completed.
The primary gatehouse, known as ‘King’s Gate’, has been renovated to incorporate a cafĂ©, shop, toilets and staff facilities and on the upper level a decked visitor viewing area has been created with art installations collectively titled 'Hands that Built the Castle'.
