Situated on a private peninsula overlooking stunning coastal scenery, Portmeirion is described as "the Italian Riviera meets rural Wales with a riot of colour and architectural styles".
Built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, Portmeirion is now one of Wales’ most popular tourist destinations.
Using an eco-friendly approach, Sir Clough Williams-Ellis designed his architectural vision around a Mediterranean piazza.
Endangered buildings and unwanted artefacts from all over the globe were transported and rebuilt to create grand porticoes and tiny terracotta-roofed houses, painted in bright colours.
At low tide, a beach is accessible and there are wonderful views of the estuary from the waterside.
Whilst at Portmeirion we ate in one of the cafes, sitting outside in the open air. Food was served on plates from the iconic Portmeirion Botanic Garden range and a cheeky blue tit entertained us when we had finished, by deciding to eat the crumbs from one of the plates.
