Our fist stop was at Beaumaris Castle, known as The Unfinished Castle.
The moated castle was built by Edward I but was never finished because money ran out.
Despite being unfinished, the castle was still very impressive and we were able to climb the walls and towers and see the spectacular views from up high.
Whilst most of the castle is now in ruin, situated in one of the towers was a surprisingly light chapel where the intricate stonework could still be seen.
After visiting the castle we took a short walk to the Courthouse Museum. The Courthouse was over 400 years old and was very much how it was originally.
When visiting the Courthouse we were able to buy a dual-ticket to also visit the Beaumaris Gaol.
The disused gaol was built in 1829, was last used as a gaol in 1878. The building became a police station in the 1950s but remains largely unaltered from when it was a prison.
The conditions people were kept in and the way they were treated seemed very harsh.
A bit of light relief was needed after the visit to the gaol so we stopped for cake and drinks at a coffee shop in the town. 😊
Later we went for a stroll up the pier.
It was very busy on the pier but we were able to stand for a while and watch the sail boats going by and watch people getting onto the boats giving tours of Puffin island.
There were also lots of people crab fishing.
Earlier in the day we had passed an ice-cream parlour that sold interesting varieties of ice-cream so after walking the pier we headed back into the town. We found what we were looking for and enjoyed ice-creams sitting in the sunshine near the Courthouse.
Cherry Cheesecake, Strawberries & Cream and 'Sea Buckthorn' flavour. Yum.
Before heading back to the cottage we took one last stroll along the waters edge. This was part of the Isle of Anglesey Coastal Path and was a nice way to end our visit to Beaumaris.
